Danehill Express (Mungrup Stud)
Danehill Express was a top class racehorse. Trained by the astute Brian Mayfield-Smith. He won at this first outing with ease as an odds on favourite should, then breezed in to win the Listed Tupperware Stakes on Caulfield Cup day at his third start.
Danehill Express recorded some impressive performances in his 9 Australian starts with one of the highlights being his luckless fast finishing second to Al Maher in the Gr1VRC Cadbury Australian Guineas over 1600m, in which he beat home Gr1 winners Savabeel, Barely A Moment, Enconsul and Niconero.
On his way to the Australian Guineas he ran a close second in the 1200m Listed Zeditave Stakes to Not A Single Doubt, finished three lengths behind Elvstroem in the Gr1 Orr Stakes and then drew the widest gate and ran four and five wide the whole 1400m to finish a gallant 1.3 length third behind Shinzig and Not A Single Doubt in the Gr3 Schweppes Cup. Danehill Express was then spelled after his second in the Australian Guineas.
After his next start in the Gr3 Gilgai Stakes he was found to have a serious lung infection which partially collapsed one lung. He suffered three months extensive treatment and was then sent to race in Hong Kong. He won the HK$1 million Quicken Away Handicap at his second start, but was unable to return to his prior form.
Mayfield-Smith described Danehill Express as a "Group one class horse. A high quality individual with a great temperament".
Not only was Danehill Express an exceptionally gifted athlete, he is also a stunning individual, as witnessed by his sale price of $1 million at the 2003 William Inglis and Son Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Leading Bloodstock Journalist and Breeding Expert – Brian Russell
To say that Danehill Express is bred "in the purple" would be an understatement. He is by super sire Danehill, Australia's champion sire on nine occasions and now proving to be the sire choice to produce champion sire sons including; Redoute's Choice, Flying Spur, Danzero, Danehill Dancer, Danasinga, Lion Hunter, Danewin, Dansili, Desert King, Rock Of Gibraltar, Commands, etc.
Danehill Express' dam is Group 1 winner Savana City, top Australasian three-year-old filly of her year. Savana City is one of those rare broodmares whose race and stud career fill a complete pedigree page under her name alone.
A champion race mare, Savana City had eight wins, three at 2 years. Six of her wins were at group or listed level including the Gr1 AJC Oaks and she was further placed in another 14 stakes and listed races.
Savana City has produced four stakes winners and two stakes placegetters. Apart from Danehill Express her progeny include multiple Gr1 winner and champion sprinter Mr Vitality (by Snippets), Dual Group winner Gr1 placegetter Rose Of War (by Danehill) and triple Listed winner Gunnamatta (by Snippets). Savana City's stakeplaced daughter Impulsive Rhythm is dam of Gr1 winner King Of Danes (also by Danehill). Group one performance is littered throughout Danehill Express' pedigree.
