A month ago trainer Jim Taylor expected Barakey to give him a second Winterbottom Stakes to go with 2012 triumph.
Taylor did get his second Winterbottom but with his second string galloper Magnifisio. As a jockey he also won two Group 1 races.
However it was not confirmed immediately. A protest by Steven Arnold the rider of the second horse Watermans Bay was lodged for interference in the early stages of the race.
Stewards dismissed the protest after a short hearing.
Magnifisio finished the race magnificently coming from fifth place to charge past the Victorian duo of Moment of Change and Angelic Light both of whom appearing strong chances at the top of the straight.
Instead it was Watermans Bay and Shining Knight that provided the final challenges to Magnifisio with Watermans Bay getting to a head of the winner.
An $80,000 purchase the mare has won 12 of her 22 starts (with 6 places) but this was her finest performance.
“She doesn’t give up and this was a gutsy win,” Taylor said.
Brown said he had a handful of horse and that she had “just enough petrol left” to respond to the challenges.
